In an effort to curb inter-provincial cross-border crime, the Northern Cape, together with law enforcement agencies from the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, North West and Free State provinces, simultaneously executed the quarterly Inter-Provincial Cross-Border High-Density Operations from 18 to 20 November 2025. The coordinated efforts resulted in the arrest of 608 suspects.
The intelligence-driven operations were led by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in partnership with Correctional Services, Home Affairs, SARS Customs, Provincial and Local Traffic Departments, Municipal Law Enforcement, Metro Police, SANParks, PSIRA, Provincial Liquor Authorities, Brand Agents, ITAC, Disaster and Fire Services, Vodacom and CPF structures. Operational activities included roadblocks on provincial and national routes, vehicle checkpoints, compliance inspections at licensed liquor outlets and second-hand goods dealerships, as well as stop-and-search operations during which more than 900 persons were searched. The operations yielded significant successes, with arrests for serious crimes such as murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery, assault GBH, burglary and theft. Law enforcement also confiscated 1,714 kilograms of copper cable, 783 counterfeit clothing items, 80 400 cigarette sticks, and assorted goods valued at R996 616-00. Substantial quantities of drugs — including dagga, crystal meth, mandrax, cocaine and CAT — with a combined street value of R742 000-00 were seized, along with several illegal firearms, among them an AK-47 and multiple revolvers. Illicit liquor, homemade brews, 11 gambling machines, and stolen livestock, cash and equipment valued at more than R1 million were also recovered. Noteworthy environmental and wildlife recoveries included abalone, crayfish and a pangolin. Two suspects were arrested for possession of the pangolin. Fines amounting to R799 230-00 were issued, while tracing units successfully arrested additional wanted suspects. Immigration enforcement led to the arrest of 63 undocumented persons and the seizure of illicit cigarettes valued at R195 000-00. These coordinated operations demonstrate the unwavering commitment of SAPS and its partners to combating crime, safeguarding communities and strengthening security along provincial borders. The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, commended law enforcement counterparts from all participating provinces and underscored the positive impact of inter-provincial collaboration in tackling priority crimes that transcend borders.
