A 31-year-old woman from Prieska, together with her family, can now find a sense of relief following the sentencing of her 63-year-old uncle to eight (8) years’ direct imprisonment by the Prieska Regional Court.

The incident dates back to Friday, 24 September 2021, when the victim returned home at approximately 21:00 after visiting a tavern. After spending some time at home, she went to sleep.

During the night, she awoke to find her uncle on top of her, allegedly having sex with her without consent. She managed to push him away and fled from the bedroom to the kitchen. The suspect followed her and attempted to persuade her not to report the incident.

In an effort to defend herself, she poured boiling water over him.

The victim then ran to a neighbour’s house for assistance and was subsequently taken to hospital for medical assessment.

A case of rape was registered at the Prieska Police Station and assigned to Detective Sergeant Riaan van Wyk of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.

The suspect was arrested and appeared in the Prieska Regional Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

After a prolonged legal process spanning more than four years, the accused was ultimately convicted and sentenced.

He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The District Commissioner of Pixley ka Seme District, Major General Nomana Mtukushe, welcomed the sentence and commended the investigating officer Detective Sergeant Riaan van Wyk for his diligence and meticulous work in ensuring the successful finalisation of the case.
