Education department saddened after bus crash claims an educator

The Northern Cape Department of Education extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and learners affected by the tragic loss of the educator from Kathu Primary School, who tragically passed away during a bus accident that occurred on Saturday, 13 June 2026.

The accident occurred at approximately 07:20, when the bus carrying 44 learners and 10 educators travelling to Seodin Primary School for a sports day event was involved in an accident.

The educator was sadly the only fatality at the scene, while another educator was airlifted to Bloemfontein for urgent medical treatment.

Three others were transported to Kimberley, and their conditions remain critical.

The learners sustained minor injuries and received the necessary medical attention.

The departmental spokesperson, Geoffrey vd Merwe said the scheduled sports day was cancelled as a result of the accident.

“Immediate psychosocial support and counselling were provided to the affected learners and educators, including at Kathu Primary School, to support the school community during this difficult time,” said vd Merwe.

“The District Office is working closely with the school and affected families to provide the necessary support and assistance.

“We also wish all those who were injured a full and speedy recovery.”
