Municipality needs assistance to catch charred suspects during substation explosion

The Sol Plaatje Municipality is still on the lookout for suspects who suffered burn wounds during the vandalism of the Beddome Substation in Southridge, which caused an outage during the early hours of Saturday, 01 August 2026.
It is believed that the suspects fled the scene after suffering burn wounds during the explosion, which claimed one of them.
A charred body of an unknown suspect was found at the scene by municipal officials who attended to the explosion.
Extra pieces of charred clothing were found at the scene.
Municipal spokesperson Thabo Mothibi said an 11kV breaker supplying the substation was vandalised, sparking an explosion that led to an outage affecting a few streets in Southridge.
“Evidence found at the scene indicates that the perpetrator/s may have sustained serious burn injuries before fleeing,” said Mothibi.
“Please help identify suspects with burn injuries.”

We appeal to the public to help protect municipal assets by reporting any suspicious activities”

The police have not yet confirmed whether there were any arrests made in connection with the incident.
