Communication partners took to the airwaves on Kurara FM in Kuruman on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, to raise awareness of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) and educate listeners on available support services, reporting mechanisms and measures to protect vulnerable individuals.

The programme brought together representatives from the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), Moleboheng Maseme, the Northern Cape Media Centre, Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, Captain Nomthandazo Mnisi and Warrant Officer Molefi Shemane, as well as Lieutenant Colonel Tebalo Julies and Captain Pulane Monchonyane from the Kathu Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. The team was joined by programme presenter Jacob Nakedi.

The discussion focused on the various forms of GBVF, the contributing factors and the importance of collective efforts to prevent and address violence in communities.

Listeners were informed about the purpose and availability of Victim-Friendly Facilities, which provide support to victims of crime and abuse.

The processes involved in applying for protection orders were also explained, while various platforms for reporting incidents of violence and abuse were shared with the community.

Concern was also raised about the withdrawal of cases, highlighting the importance of supporting victims throughout the reporting and justice processes and encouraging them to seek assistance when faced with abuse or intimidation.

The programme concluded with a strong message to women and young girls to break the silence, speak out against abuse and report incidents of violence to the relevant authorities.

Safety tips were also shared to help vulnerable groups take precautionary measures and access assistance when needed.

The South African Police Service, together with its communication partners and relevant stakeholders, remains committed to raising awareness, strengthening community partnerships and promoting a collective response to gender-based violence and femicide.

Members of the public are encouraged to report incidents of abuse and work with law enforcement agencies to ensure that victims receive the necessary support and that perpetrators are held accountable.
