Illegal dumping a nightmare in Lethabo Park
Boipelo Mere
Lethabo Park community members called for a Skip rubbish bin to be posted in the park, following complaints from residents living adjacent to what they refer to as an illegal dumping site.
The residents made a plea for intervention from Sol Plaatje Municipality, stating that they no longer enjoy the freedom of their yards due to the stench emanating from the illegal dump, which started two months ago.
A woman who stays in Lethabo Phase 2 near White City main road, said her home has turned into a pigsty, a health hazard, which has worsened her child’s condition. The child is suffering from chronic asthma and sinusitis.
She explained that the rubbish, which is now piling up closer to her front door, is making it difficult to keep her door open.
She said it feels like she is being punished for not being able to erect a fence.
According to the woman, various pleas for intervention continued to fall on deaf ears, as her ward councilor constantly refers her to the municipality to lay a complaint.
She further indicated that the municipal truck collects household rubbish bins every Tuesday; however, grass and other
waste are the responsibility of households to dispose of, so they resort to dumping at the nearest spot.
“I am an enemy to other people, because some of them are arrogant. Sometimes I even end up using strong language and I can’t stop them from physically
dumping. Most of the time, I don’t see the illegal dumping, only to find new piles of rubbish in the morning,” She explained.
“I believe they use bakkies and not only wheelbarrows because of the piles,” she commented.
She suggests that the municipality must arrange an alternative means of safely disposing of other types of rubbish
. “That bin can be cleared every second week so that we can lead a normal life.”
Awaiting comment from Sol Plaatje Municipality.
