As the festive season approaches, the South African Police Service urges community members to remain vigilant and avoid situations that could lead to violent crime. The SAPS will continue implementing proactive policing measures to ensure that all citizens enjoy a safe and crime-free festive period.
In view of this, the Frances Baard District Commissioner, Major General Charlotte Makgari, has welcomed the fifteen-year prison sentence recently handed down to 27-year-old Samkelo Blessing Komazi by the Kimberley Regional Court.
On Friday, 22 December 2023, police from Kimberley responded to a complaint about a fatal stabbing in Stockdale Street, Kimberley. Upon arrival, officers found a male victim with a stab wound to the abdomen.
Preliminary investigations revealed that an altercation had occurred between the 24-year-old deceased, Donovan Reed, and the accused, which resulted in the fatal stabbing. The accused was arrested shortly thereafter and charged with murder.
He appeared in court several times before the conclusion of the trial and sentencing.
Major General Makgari commended Detective Sergeant Kelaegile Mosala of the Kimberley Serious and Violent Crime Unit for her thorough investigative work, which ensured that the perpetrator was removed from society for a significant period. She further welcomed the court’s ruling, declaring the accused unfit to possess a firearm.
