MEC VILAKAZI REAFFIRMS GOVERNMENT’S COMMITMENT TO THE ELDERLY AND PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN NOUPOORT

The MEC for Social Development in the Northern Cape, Ms Nontobeko Vilakazi, has
reaffirmed government’s commitment to protecting the dignity, rights and wellbeing of
older persons and persons living with disabilities, during the Older Persons
Appreciation Programme held in Noupoort, Umsobomvu Local Municipality, in the
Pixley Ka Isaka Seme District.
Addressing elders and people living with disabilities, MEC Vilakazi said the
government remains fully committed to improving the quality of life of society’s most
vulnerable groups. “Even though Noupoort is a small town, it carries a rich political
history and has produced leaders who continue to serve our country today. This
community is important and it matters to this government,” said MEC Vilakazi.
She acknowledged the severe socio-economic conditions faced by many households,
including food insecurity and unemployment, but stressed that government continues
to intervene through social protection programmes.
“We know that many families go to bed without food, and we know the struggles you
are facing. What we brought today may be little, but it comes from a caring government
that is committed to making a difference in your lives,” she said.
The MEC commended the people of Noupoort for choosing to attend the programme
despite it being a social grant payment day, saying this reflected their commitment to
wellbeing and community engagement.
“On days like today, many people would choose to go and collect their grants first, but
you came here before anything else. You chose to receive the message of government
first, and that speaks volumes about your priorities and discipline,” MEC Vilakazi
added.
A total of 200 elderly persons and 50 persons living with disabilities were identified to
receive vouchers and other support items as part of government’s continued efforts to
restore dignity and provide relief to vulnerable groups. The MEC urged beneficiaries
to spend vouchers responsibly.
“Please do not use these vouchers to buy alcohol or unnecessary things. Use them to
support your households and buy what you really need,” she advised. She further
encouraged families to strengthen values of respect, unity and care within
communities.
“Teach your children love, humanity and respect. Let us stop destroying lives that later
lead our young people to prison. We must build our communities together,” she said.
The MEC concluded her address by wishing families a peaceful festive season and
reaffirming government’s commitment to serving all people without discrimination.
“May you enjoy Christmas with your families and loved ones. May the good Lord guide
you, protect you and bless you during this festive season. This government remains
committed to taking care of you,” she said.
The event was attended by local leadership including the Mayor of Umsobomvu
Municipality, Councillors, the South African Police Service (SAPS), Department of
Correctional Services, the Department of Social Development and other community
stakeholders.
Mayor of Umsobomvu Local Municipality, Cllr. Mzwandile Toto said the programme
conveyed a message of hope from government and demonstrated that the 7th
Administration
under Premier Dr Zamani Saul continues to prioritise the needs
of the people.
Earlier in the programme, SAPS Station Commander Captain Khunou encouraged
older persons to report abuse and assured them that protection orders and decisive
action against perpetrators would be taken. Correctional Services official Ms. Khethiwe
Asiya highlighted rehabilitation programmes and urged families to support
reintegration efforts.
The programme formed part of the Department of Social Development’s December
activities dedicated to honouring older persons for their lifelong contribution to society
and recognising the continued care they provide to families and communities under
challenging conditions.
