MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE OFFICE OF THE PROVINCIAL COMMISSIONER: NORTHERN CAPE
As the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign draws to a close, a series of build-up programmes are being rolled out in Kakamas to strengthen community involvement and awareness.
On Monday, 8 December 2025, the “Sport is Your Future” youth tournament was hosted in Kakamas. The initiative, spearheaded by the Provincial Head of Proactive Policing, Brigadier Irene Kopeledi, aimed to unite key stakeholders and the local community while promoting positive youth development through sport.
The event was attended by stakeholders from various government departments, the Provincial Chairperson of the Community Policing Forum, Mr Clement Baai, and was officiated by the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Johnny Besnaar.
Proceedings commenced with a formal welcome by the Kakamas Station Commander, Colonel Jan-Andries Witlbooi, followed by an outline of the purpose of the event delivered by Colonel Sebe Qunta.
Messages of support were presented by representatives from the National Prosecuting Authority, the Kai-Garib Traffic Department, Sergeant Venessa Sambo, the Women’s Network Secretary, as well as Pastor Frederick Louw.
A unified message emphasising the critical role of society and collective community action in eradicating crimes against women and children was reiterated by all speakers.
Addressing the gathering, Major General Besnaar underscored the vital importance of ongoing awareness around gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) and reaffirmed the commitment of the South African Police Service to protecting women and children. He further highlighted the value of sporting activities in fostering discipline, leadership and unity among the youth, particularly young boys.
“A child in sport is a child out of court,” Major General Besnaar emphasised.
Youth from the Kakamas community actively participated in soccer and netball matches and were awarded medals in recognition of their participation.
Build-up programmes focusing on GBVF will continue until the campaign officially concludes on 10 December 2025.
