The Department of Water and Sanitation revealed that most dams and reservoirs in the Northern Cape province have experienced a slight decrease, but satisfactory levels.

The weekly report on the status of water reservoirs released this week indicates that the levels have declined from last weeks’ 103.9% to 96.7% this week.

The Full Supply Capacity of the Northern Cape is 149.29 million Cubic Meters.

Vanderkloof Dam in the Orange River System, located at the border of the Free State and the Northern Cape is at 103.2% full.

The two main river water systems in the Northern Cape, Vaal and Orange, are respectively sitting at 100.9% and 100% full supply capacity.

Spitskop Dam in Jankempdorp area has increased to 105.8%, Vaalharts Weir in Warrenton area has decreased from 80.2% to 75.8%, Douglas Weir decreased from 131% to 125.1%, while the Karee Dam is at 39.4%.

The Departmental Spokesperson Amogelang Moholoeng, explained that the dams/weirs reflected above are not for long-term water storage, but serve as balancing dams designed to act as a multi-purpose facility.

“They also serve as distribution points from where water is diverted into pipelines, canals or power-generating turbines,” said Moholoeng.
