Northern Cape SAPS Urges Communities to Prioritise Personal Safety When Leaving Entertainment Establishments
Supplied
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape cautions community members, particularly women, to prioritise their personal safety when leaving drinking establishments and other entertainment venues, especially during the late hours of the night and early morning.
The Northern Cape SAPS appeals to community members to observe the following safety measures:
-
Avoid walking alone at night: Travel with trusted friends and avoid isolated or poorly lit areas.
-
Plan your trip home: Arrange reliable transport in advance and wait in a safe, well-lit place if necessary.
-
Look out for one another: Ensure everyone in your group has a safe way home.
-
Be cautious of strangers: Avoid being lured into isolated places and seek help if you feel unsafe.
-
Avoid confrontations: Move away from fights or violent incidents and prioritise your safety.
-
Drink responsibly: Limit alcohol consumption and stay alert to your surroundings.
-
Keep your phone charged: Ensure you can contact trusted people or emergency services when needed.
-
Report suspicious behaviour: Seek help from security personnel or the police if you feel threatened or believe you are being followed.
The Northern Cape SAPS reiterates that rape is a serious criminal offence.
No person has the right to force another person into sexual activity, regardless of their relationship, marital status, previous consent or circumstances.
The police urge victims of rape and sexual violence to report incidents to their nearest police station so that investigations can be initiated and appropriate action taken against perpetrators.
Community members are encouraged to work with the police, community policing forums and other relevant stakeholders to promote safer environments and prevent gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).
The Northern Cape SAPS remains committed to protecting communities and calls on everyone to take responsibility for promoting a culture of safety, respect and accountability.
Let us look out for one another. Plan your journey home, avoid isolated routes and help ensure that everyone reaches their destination safely.
