Police arrest turns brutal in Lethabo Park

TWO Lethabo Park residents were arrested along with a 14-months baby after being assaulted by Policemen during an arrest on Sunday, 31 May.
John Mogotsi, 48 is recovering from serious internal injuries, was treated at a local hospital after the duo’s brief appearance at court, on Tuesday, 2 June. The incident happened at Mogotsi’s resident.
The second resident, Palesa Galeitsiwe, 23, who reportedly stumbled upon the assault at Mogotsi’s home, tried to record the incident with her cell phone.
The incident allegedly happened while Galeitsiwe was carrying the infant on her back. The infant also sustained bruises mostly on her face were held at Witdam Police Station holding cells.
The incident, which is believed to be linked to a dispute around the occupation of a ghost shack, reportedly happened in the presence of Mogotsi’s wife.
The wife, Jennifer, said her husband has suffered injuries on the left side of his body and is now using crutches to walk.
“His head was swollen, was experiencing difficulty to breathe, memory loss, and hearing challenges following the assault He spend 2 days in a holding cell without getting medical care,” said Jennifer.
Mogotsi was charged with assaulting a police officer while the member was trying to arrest him on a separate case and allegedly resisted arrest. Mogotsi was released on bail R500 and the court granted him an opportunity to complete the J88 process.
Galeitsiwe was charged with obstructing a police official from executing his duties by hindering the police officer while he was trying to effect the arrest. She is expected to make her next appearance on 10 June 2026.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Litabe said the police in Roodepan are investigating a case of Assault GBH against a 48-year-old male.
He also indicated that allegations regarding the police member’s conduct will be investigated internally.
