Stepfather Sentenced To Life Imprisonment For Rape

The District Commissioner in the Pixley Ka Seme District, Major General Nomana Mtukushe, has welcomed the life sentence imposed on a 39-year-old stepfather from Prieska for rape.

The Prieska Regional Court heard that in July 2020, a concerned community member alerted the police to a possible sexual assault involving a 16-year-old victim.

Preliminary investigations confirmed that the victim had been sexually abused.

A rape case was subsequently registered, and the suspect was arrested and formally charged.

The case was assigned to Detective Sergeant Riaan Van Wyk of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Prieska.

Further investigation revealed that the accused had been sexually abusing the victim over a period of 13 years. It was also established that the victim had fallen pregnant on several occasions as a result of the abuse.

Following multiple court appearances, the accused was found guilty on several counts of rape.

On Tuesday, 24 February 2026, he was sentenced to an effective life term of imprisonment. His name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders, and he has been declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Major General Mtukushe commended Sergeant Van Wyk for his dedication and perseverance in ensuring that justice was served and that the perpetrator of gender-based violence received an appropriate sentence.
