Sol Plaatje Municipality has expressed concern after vandals went on a rampage, destroying more than ten tombstones at Roodepan Cemetery.
This despicable act comes after the Municipality erected a new perimeter fence worth R4 166 000, and undertook a massive clean-up operation as part of plans to expand the cemetery.
Municipal spokesperson Thabo Mothibi said preliminary observations are that concrete slabs from the old fence were used in this heinous and barbaric act.
“Please help the Municipality preserve the dignity of our departed resting in our cemeteries,” Mothibi pleaded.
He urged residents to report acts of theft and vandalism to SAPS on 10111, and/or report suspicious activities to the municipal Security Unit on 080 122 9010.
Mothibi further encouraged residents with departed loved ones buried at Roodepan Cemetery and memorialised with tombstones, to visit the cemetery for assessments.
