The South African Police Service in the Pixley ka Seme District Municipality has crowned a new group of youth leaders through its Junior Commissioner Project, highlighting the growing role of young people in building safer communities.
District Commissioner Major General Nomana Mtukushe hosted the initiative at the De Aar Town Hall on 24 February 2026. The event brought together key stakeholders, including the Department of Education, the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture and financial institutions Old Mutual and Standard Bank.
“Twenty learners participated in a public speaking competition, delivering impromptu speeches on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) and its impact on society,” the statement said.
“Learners used the platform to commit to ending bullying in schools and confronting factors that contribute to crimes against women and children.”
Following a competitive adjudication process, four Junior Commissioners were appointed, including the Junior District Commissioner, the Junior Visible Policing Coordinator and the Junior District Operational Commander.
The newly elected youth leaders will act as ambassadors for safety, promoting crime prevention initiatives in schools and communities, a reminder that young voices remain central to the fight against GBVF in the Northern Cape.
