Pixley Ka Seme District Commissioner Hosts Sport Against Crime Tournament In De Aar
In an effort to strengthen community involvement and raise public awareness, a Sport Against Crime mini-tournament was held at the Merino Park Sports Stadium in Kareeville, De Aar, on Wednesday, 15 April 2026. The initiative, spearheaded by the Provincial Head of Proactive Policing, Brigadier Irene Kopeledi, aimed to unite key stakeholders and the local community through the power of sport. The event was supported by stakeholders from various government departments, including the Department of Social Development, the National Prosecuting Authority, the Independent Electoral Commission, the Department of Education, the Department of Public Works, the Department of Home Affairs, and the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison. The programme was officiated by the Provincial Programme Director, Captain Bennett Phoko. Proceedings commenced with a devotion and prayer led by Professor Xolani Somathamba from Spiritual Crime Prevention, followed by a formal welcome address by Councillor Phumelele Mhlauli. The purpose of the day was outlined by the District Youth Desk Chairperson, Mr Sinethemba Sandi. Messages of support were delivered by the Pixley Ka Seme District Community Policing Chairperson, Mr George Mngcineni; Mr Vuyani Loko from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture; Councillor Martha Mackay; District Director Khathazile Tolong from the Department of Roads and Public Works; and Advocate Mpho Tau from the National Prosecuting Authority. Spiritual soul-healing games, comprising of netball and soccer matches, were held, encouraging camaraderie and sportsmanship among participants.
