Klipfontein Community Welcomes The Sentence Handed Down To Accused For Assaulting A Toddler

The Namakwa District Management embraced the sentence handed down to 31-year-old Andrew Brink, who was sentenced to five (5) years imprisonment after pleading guilty to Assault (GBH)with the Intent to cause grievous bodily Harm in the Garies Regional Court on 14 April 2026. On 1 February 2025 at approximately 16:20, a group of adults, including the accused, were socialising and consuming alcohol at a private residence in Klipfontein. The accused threw a glass at a woman, causing the glass to miss her but shattered after hitting the wall. Glass fragments struck the 4-year-old boy victim, who was standing nearby, causing severe lacerations to his face. The matter was subsequently reported to the police by a social worker attached to the hospital, which led to the arrest of the accused on 13 March 2025. The accused appeared in the Garies Regional Court on 14 April 2026, where he pleaded guilty and was sentenced as follows: • Five (5) years imprisonment in terms of Section 276(1)(i) of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977. • He was declared not suitable to work with children in terms of Section 120(4) of the Children’s Act 38 of 2005. And declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000. Brigadier Schalk Andrews welcomed the sentence handed down by the court which reaffirms its commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our society, particularly children. He also acknowledged the meticulous investigative work of Warrant Officer Ayanda Phillips of FCS Springbok in ensuring that victims of crime receives justice. End.
