Postmasburg taxi driver convicted of statutory rape

A 33-year-old taxi driver from Postmasburg was convicted of statutory rape by the Regional Court sitting in Postmasburg on 13 August 2026.
The conviction follows an incident that occurred on Sunday, 28 April 2024, when the accused sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl.
The accused allegedly forced her into the taxi he was driving shortly after she left a tuck shop on her way home.
He drove her to his residence where he raped her and threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident to anyone.
Several months later, the victim was diagnosed with a medical condition and subsequently disclosed the incident to her mother.
The matter was reported to the police, and a case of statutory rape was registered at the Postmasburg Police Station.
The accused was subsequently arrested and charged with statutory rape.
The conviction was welcomed by the Northern Cape Provincial Management, which coincides towards the closure of Women’s Month.
The case was assigned to Detective Constable Tina Besson of the Postmasburg Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for investigation.
The accused was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of rape or statutory rape during the period of suspension.
The court further declared him unfit to possess a firearm and prohibited him from working with children, additionally his name was entered into the National Register for Sexual Offenders.
The Acting District Commissioner of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, Brigadier Kenneth Baloyi, welcomed the sentence and commended Detective Constable Besson for conducting a thorough investigation that contributed to securing the conviction.
