The Springbok Regional Court recently sentenced 23-year-old El-Jean Cupido to 10 years’ imprisonment for the culpable homicide of 71-year-old Edwin Charles Hagglund.
Three years are suspended, and the accused was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The court heard that the tragic incident happened during a social gathering at the deceased’s hone in Nababeep on 04 November 2023.
Excessive alcohol consumption was consumed and aggression escalated into a violent confrontation.
The accused, who had been welcomed at the gathering, assaulted Edwin Hagglund, who sustained severe blunt-force trauma to his neck and subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
The matter was meticulously investigated by Sergeant Arno Heyns of the Nababeep Detective Services, whose thorough investigation contributed to securing the conviction and sentence.
The Acting District Commissioner for Namakwa, Colonel Moses Lekgwati, commended Sergeant Heyns for his professionalism and dedication in ensuring that the matter was thoroughly investigated and brought before the court.
Colonel Lekgwati also warned against the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption and the role it can play in fuelling violence and other criminal behaviour.
This tragic incident serves as a painful reminder of the devastating consequences of alcohol-fuelled violence.
The SAPS welcomes the sentence and remains committed to ensuring that perpetrators of violent crime are brought to justice. Communities are encouraged to work closely with the police and to report incidents of violence and criminality to the SAPS.
