Sol Plaatje Municipality and its consulting engineers, Bigen Africa, have won a top national award engineering Excellence Award after implementing a smart water network projects that saved more than R34 million annually.
The prestigious award, presented by Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA), falls in the category for projects under R50 million to recognise game-changing Pressure and Network Zone Management Project (PNZMP).
The awarded project forms part of its massive R2.5 billion Budget Facility for Infrastructure (BFI), being rolled out for bulk water supply infrastructure repairs and upgrades.

Municipal spokesperson Thabo Mothibi said the project has saved 2 030 megalitres of water annually, with 27% reduction in network water losses.
“Capacity unlocked for 6 900 more households,” said Mothibi.
The municipality’s BFI Project Manager Siva Puckree lauded the award as more than being enveloped in glory, but as proof that innovation delivers.
“This project shows how smart technology can bring real water, financial and social benefits.
We have improved reliability and built a more resilient network for our people,” he enthused.
