Mourners who attended the funeral service of Kenalemang Cynthia Moreothata have pleaded with the government to end Gender Based Violence. Moreothata was allegedly killed by her husband who is a Pastor in what many described as one of the most brutal murders in the province.
She was allegedly beaten to death with a hockey stick by her Pastor husband, who was denied bail and will appear again on 28 September 2025. She was also allegedly strangled and suffocated earlier this month, in front of her 15 -year- old daughter, who is now a witness in a murder case.
Hundreds of mourners converged in their numbers to honour a life that was tragically cut shot.
The family is still reeling in shock following the brutal death their daughter. Family spokesperson, Diphoko Moreothata said they have left everything in the hands of police as they are seeking justice.
“Right now as the family we are shuttered and broken. We were not yet ready to say goodbye to our grandchild, but this incident happened and we are trying to be strong. We try not to be judgemental, hence we left everything in the hands of the authorities,” said Moreothata.
ANC Councillor who is also ANC Women’s League member Keitumetse Molale has urged women to stand up and fight Gender Based Violence. “Women need to stand up against GBV. Right now we are heartbroken because she was our members. We stood together and her death came as a shock to us,” she said.
Cynthia’s death came after a 32-year old Litwina Johnson’s body was discovered in a shallow grave in De Aar on 6 August 2025. Johnson was allegedly seen in the company of her boyfriend on 30 March before her body was dug out from a shallow grave.
Through meticulous investigative work, including collection of evidence, police were able to positively link the suspects to the crime. The two suspects, aged 25 and 26 respectively, were arrested and charged with murder and defeating the ends of justice. They appeared in the De Aar Magistrate’s Court on 14 August 2025. The matter has been remanded until 18 September 2025. Police investigations are ongoing according to the SAPS.
