Witsand Nature Reserve waiting to be explored

The unearthed Witsand Kalahari Nature Reserve has been embraced with excitement and lauded as the getaway spot with unique features that only a few are familiar with.

The destination promises exploration of the rich desert white sand, giving visitors a taste of its magical roaring sound.

Nestled in between Grobblershoop and Griekwastad the Nature Reserve has come forth as a hidden gem, waiting to be explored.

The board ‘Witsand Nature Reserve’ is visible on the R8 about 50kms from Griekwastad, before driving on a gravel road stretching just 45 km after the turn off.

Surprisingly enough, Witsand Kalahari Nature is hanging on the boarders of the Pixley Ka Seme and the ZF Mgcawu district.

It caught the attention of many when the Northern Cape department of Tourism identified it as the venue for this year’s Tourism Month launch in September.

The premises offer self-catering accommodations, a variety of family-friendly activities, a crystal clear sky with a clear view of the stars, and scenic picnic spots perfect for outings.

Witsand offers a piece of everything from thrill seekers, culture enthusiast, and nature lovers.

Activities range from Sandboarding, Bird watching, Quad biking and Biking.

Admiration towards the destination was not only expressed by the MEC for Finance, Economic Development Venus Blennies-Magaba, but also by the guests who attended the launch.

Celebrated under the theme ‘Tourism and Sustainable Transformation’ the 2025 Tourism Month celebrations aimed to reflect government’s commitment of using tourism as a catalyst for inclusive growth, environmental stewardship, and cultural preservation.

The MEC called for more efforts to ensure that the venue gets embraced and celebrated as it has been hidden and only benefitted a few.

Emphasizing on domestic tourism is targeted to position as a growth frontier in the country in terms of transforming the region into a hub of economic opportunity and innovation, creating jobs and empowering communities.

The provincial government has already invested R37.8 million in tourism programmes, focusing on job creation, new product development, and sustainable practices.
