The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga, welcomed the combined 25-year imprisonment sentence imposed on 23-year-old Sivuyile Mntuyedwa for murder and attempted murder in Kuyasa village on 6 September 2025.
Mntuyedwa was involved in an altercation with the son of 49 year-old Sarah Tina when he drew a knife, during the incident, and approached the son. Tina intervened to defuse the situation but was stabbed in the upper body.
The accused later followed 27 year-old Patrick Vuyo Louw, who had stopped to assist the injured woman, but was fatally stabbed in the chest. Louw died on the scene, and Mntuyedwa was subsequently arrested.
A thorough investigation by Detective Sergeant ZG Phololo attached to Kuyasa Detectives secured the successful prosecution.
On 7 October 2026, the Colesberg Regional Court sentenced Mntuyedwa to 15 years’ imprisonment for murder and 10 years for attempted murder and was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Major General Ngubelanga commended the investigating officer and prosecution team for their dedication and professionalism, reaffirming the SAPS commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of violent crime are held accountable.
