Operation Shanella II Lead To Multiple Arrest

The execution of Operation Shanela II in the Northern Cape, conducted from Monday, 20 April 2026 to Sunday, 26 April 2026, resulted in the arrest of 228 suspects linked to various criminal offences.

Working in collaboration with the Traffic Police, Department of Health, Department of Home Affairs, and the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison, the South African Police Service (SAPS) successfully apprehended individuals who contravened the law across all five districts of the province.

The suspects, comprising, were arrested for offences including rape, fraud, domestic violence, possession of dagga, dealing in and possession of drugs, possession of precious metals, possession of uncut diamonds, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), contravention of immigration laws, burglary at residential and business premises, driving under the influence of alcohol, and other related crimes.

These coordinated operations, led by senior officers at provincial, district, and station levels, also resulted in the seizure of drugs, alcohol, cash, dangerous weapons, and precious metals.

A significant number of persons, vehicles, and premises were searched during the operations.
Law enforcement agencies further conducted roadblocks, vehicle control points, tracing operations, compliance inspections at licensed liquor outlets, and high-visibility patrols on major routes across the five districts of the Northern Cape.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, commended SAPS members and their counterparts for their continued efforts in ensuring that the citizens of the province are and feel safe within their communities.

All arrested suspects are expected to appear in various courts soon to answer to the charges against them.

The SAPS, together with its stakeholders, will continue to assert the authority of the state and work closely with communities to ensure that the Northern Cape remains a safe and secure environment for all.
