More than 200 suspects arrested during week long Operation Shanela

A total of 225 suspects were arrested for offences linked to drug-related crimes, illegal liquor trading, property related crimes, murder, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm during week-long operations by the Northern Cape police.

The operations were conducted by the Deputy Provincial Commissioners, District Commissioners and Senior officers on Provincial, District and Station level together with community structures and government departments in the Northern Cape.

The teams heightened crime combatting initiatives by displaying an aggressive stance on crime across the province from Monday, 6 July until Sunday 12 July 2026.

Detectives conducted tracing operations that led to the arrest of several wanted suspects who had been evading law enforcement and court appearances for various offences.

Police spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers said a total of 2 493 vehicles were also searched during the process.

“Operational actions included stop-and-search actions, high-visibility patrols, vehicle checkpoints (VCPs) and roadblocks,” said Ehlers.

“Furthermore, compliance inspections with relevant authorities were carried out at liquor outlets, second-hand goods dealers, scrapyards, recycling facilities, firearm dealerships, informal businesses, including tuck shops, hair salons and food outlets to ensure adherence to relevant legislation.”

She elaborated that several unlicensed liquor outlets were shut down due to non-compliance and violation of various regulations as a result.

Authorities made a significant advancement in the eradication of drugs, by arresting 50 suspects for drug related crimes and seizing a substantial quantity of drugs.

Large amounts of cash believed to the proceeds of these criminal activities was also confiscated.

Additionally, alcohol, copper cable and dangerous weapons were confiscated during the stop and search actions.

Furthermore, several community outreach programmes and awareness campaigns were held to create awareness and promote the prevention of trending crimes.

The Northern Cape SAPS remains resolute and committed to creating a safer environment.

Law enforcement agencies will continue to disrupt criminal activities through the execution of intelligence driven and focused actions.
