Saps confirms To Road Crash Involving Foreign Nationals

No fatalities have been reported regarding the road crash involving a minibus that was transporting foreign nationals from Cape Town to Mozambique on 1 July 2026.

The SAPS in the Northern Cape confirms that the road accident occurred at approximately 08:40 on the N1 road, approximately 19 kilometres from Hanover towards Colesberg.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien said preliminary information indicates that the 15-seater minibus taxi overturned after the trailer attached to the vehicle reportedly experienced a mechanical failure.

She elaborated that a total of 20 passengers were travelling in the vehicle, consisting of 14 adults and six children between the ages of five and seven years.

She said all relevant role players, including SAPS, EMS, Immigration officials and Social Services, attended to the scene to assist with the situation.

“Three passengers sustained minor injuries and were attended to by Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

“No fatalities have been reported at this stage,” said Gamieldien.

She added that it was established upon assessment that some passengers were in possession of travel documents, while others did not have the required documentation.

“The matter has been referred to the relevant immigration authorities for further processing.

“Social Services have also been notified and are attending to the affected children.”

The SAPS urges motorists to exercise caution on the roads and to ensure that vehicles are roadworthy before undertaking long-distance journey.
