The family of slain 19-year-old Lesedi Petersen remains doubtful that they will get justice after the South African Police gave them a response of ‘no progress’ on the murder of their child.
Petersen died in hospital following an alleged stabbing in Seochoareng Street, Galeshewe during the early hours of Monday morning, 20 July 2026.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Molefi Shemane said the Galeshewe Serious and Violent Crimes Unit are seeking the public’s assistance in solving a murder case following the alleged stabbing.
Members of the Kimberley Crime Prevention group, including Kagisho Morute, hunted down three suspects implicated in the stabbing. They recorded the suspects’ confession before handing them to the Galeshewe police.
Morute said the police interviewed the suspects in their presence, where one of the suspects confess
ed; however, the suspects were later released, which outraged community members.
This has since triggered a community march under the banner ‘JusticeForLesego’ demanding transparency from the police on why the suspects were released.
The police were given seven days to respond, but another march was held as a reminder on Day 6, demanding that the Investigating Officer be changed.
In response to the memorandum for transparency, SAPS has informed the family that no evidence links the suspects to the case.
SAPS acknowledged receipt of witness statements and continues to encourage anyone else with information to come forward.
SAPS also indicated that the case has been escalated to the office of the Provincial Commissioner for the appointment of an Independent Investigating Officer.
The mother of the deceased, Mercy Petersen, expressed how heartbreaking it is to watch that her child’s killer will never be punished.
She expressed that Lesego was her only child and was supposed to start at Moremogolo TVET College two days after the day he was buried.
