Effects of Operation Shanela 2 continue to be felt across the Province

The positive impact of Operation Shanela 2 continues to be felt across the Northern Cape following high-density operations conducted from Monday, 22 December to Sunday, 28 December 2025.

The operations were led and coordinated by senior officers from the Provincial Office, District Commissioners and Station Commanders. These efforts resulted in the arrest of a total of 1 416 suspects for various criminal offences.

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), in partnership with other government departments and stakeholders, conducted vehicle checkpoints, compliance inspections, roadblocks, patrols, tracing operations, stop-and-search operations and closed a significant number of unlicensed liquor outlets.

During the operations, police searched 27 449 individuals, 133 premises and 8 981 vehicles and conducted 14 tracing operations targeting suspects wanted for various crimes.

In a separate incident, two male suspects aged 30 and 37 were arrested in Springbok, Namakwa District, on Tuesday, 23 December 2025, after being found in possession of a significant quantity of endangered species. The suspects were charged with contravening the Biodiversity Act.

The coordinated efforts across all districts also led to the confiscation a substantial amount of liquor,  cellphones,  dangerous weapons and  cash suspected to have been generated through illegal activities. Various types of illegal drugs were also seized during the operations.

Law enforcement operations will continue unabated, with strict enforcement of all applicable laws to ensure the safety and security of residents and visitors to the Northern Cape during the festive season and beyond.

The SAPS Management in the province extends its appreciation to all stakeholders within the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster for their valuable contribution and continued support in the fight against crime.

Appreciation is also extended to Community Policing Forums (CPFs) for the vital and commendable role they continue to play in enhancing community safety and crime prevention across the province.
