SEVERN RAPE ACCUSED SENTENCED TO TEN YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT
Kimberley, 5 September 2025 – What began as a night out with friends at a tavern in Madibeng Village, Severn, turned into a horrific ordeal for a 26-year-old woman on 30 November 2019.
The victim, who had been at the tavern with friends, was in the company of her 22-year-old cousin, who later became the accused.
In the early hours of the morning, when the tavern was closing, the accused asked the victim to accompany him to a nearby house. When she refused, he produced a knife and forced her to remove her shoes.
He then dragged her to his house, where he raped her. After the assault, the accused fell asleep, allowing the victim to escape and report the incident to the police.
The accused was arrested shortly thereafter and remained in custody throughout the trial.
On Wednesday, 3 September 2025, the Kuruman Regional Court found the 22-year-old accused guilty of rape. He was sentenced to ten years’ direct imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The Acting District Commissioner of John Taolo Gaetsewe, Brigadier Kenneth Baloyi, commended Detective Sergeant Precious Tshikedi of the Kuruman Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for her meticulous investigative work, which ensured that justice was served and the perpetrator was held accountable.
